Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)– The first degree murder trial in the 2020 death of Angel Bastman in Lake Park continued Friday afternoon with a key witness taking the stand.
The defense called its third in-person witness to the stand on the fourth day of proceedings in Spirit Lake, that being the defendant Allison Decker.
After nearly an hour and a half of testifying, council asked about her involvement in the physical act of killing Angel Bastman which Decker maintained her innocence but noted she does feel guilty about events leading up the act itself and doing nothing to stop them.
Decker further denies having used controlled substances in Lake Park despite testimony from earlier witnesses claiming otherwise, including co-defendant Justice Berntson who indicted multiples times on the stand that she was indeed present in the basement of the Bastman home where the drugs were allegedly used.
Decker also admitted under oath that she was in possession of a number of items deemed stolen from the house in Lake Park but claimed she was unaware of the status of those items after reportedly having been told permission had been given for the items to leave the house as a way for Berntson to pay back a “debt” for previously purchased controlled substances.
The defendant was the final witness expected to be called in the case with final motions and closing arguments scheduled to take place Monday morning.
