Des Moines, IA (KICD)– Two governmental agencies have completed what are being called routine inspections on two low-incoming housing developments managed by a man with ties to Spencer.

The Des Moines Register reports Carlson Property Holdings and Management, and Truverse Management, run by Brad Carlson; manages over 65 apartment complexes where at least 175 residents have complained about rent levels and living conditions; and contractors say they have not been paid for work.  Ex-employees said much of the staff was laid off even after the companies received 1.14 million dollars in forgivable federal paycheck Protection loans.

In a statement Carlson reportedly emailed to a reporter Friday, he said “Like many small businesses in Iowa, the COVID pandemic created employment and contracting challenges.”  He goes on “Truverse remains committed to our long-term maintenance and renovation goals.  However, we will not pay for substandard and unsatisfactory work.”

The Des Moines Register’s WATCHDOG column first reported on this several weeks ago, but there have been no formal investigations opened into the properties.
