Milford, IA (KICD)– A local high school student is being identified as the victim of a weekend hunting incident near Milford.

Information from a Go Fund Me page shared by Okoboji High School says Joe Salmon was hunting waterfowl Saturday morning near Lower Gar Lake when he was shot in the head before being airlifted to a Sioux Falls Hospital where he remains hospitalized.

Okoboji Activities Director and Football Coach Nick Mulder tells KICD News Salmon is considered to be a local hero after he several others jumped into action in February to save a man whose vehicle fell through the ice on East Lake Okoboji near the Highway 71 bridge.

Mulder says multiple fundraising efforts have already been created to help support Salmon in his recovery.

The events that led up to Saturday’s incident remain under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
