Sioux Falls, SD (KICD) — Perhaps you’ve already heard the announcement on the KICD Farm News: Sioux-Falls based POET biorefining has announced it is halting productions at its plants in Ashton and Coon Rapids, Iowa; Chancellor, South Dakota; delaying the start-up of their new plant in Shelbyville, Indianna; and is cutting production at its remaining facilities including Emmetsburg.

CEO Jeff Broin says the industry and farm communities are facing an “unprecedented challenge”, and the company is working hard to ensure that every plant will be positioned to thrive when things get back to normal.

Osceola County Economic Development Director Stephanie Neppl tells KICD News this announcement will likely have a significant impact on the local economy.

The ethanol industry was already challenged with a world-wide oil war that has dropped the price of crude oil; and now COVID-19-related travel restrictions have decimated the market for gasoline.
