Sheldon, IA (KICD) — On May 31st a tornado struck a portion of Sheldon without notice.
Warning Coordinator Peter Rogers with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls explained to KICD News last week why sophisticated equipment did not detect the storm.
O’Brien County Emergency Management Coordinator Jarod Johnson says funnel clouds had been spotted earlier in the day South of town, but nobody reported them to his office.
Rogers says on-the-ground spotters are still essential to the weather network, and N.W.S. offers the public training.
The tornado started near Crossroads Pavilion and proceeded to the Northwest for nearly a mile tipping over R.V.s at a dealership and damaging three metal roofs. There were no injuries.
