Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Fall Sports practices are underway, and here at KICD we are recapping the past high school sports year by featuring some of the best teams in the KICD 9-County Area.

Next up is Spencer Boys Soccer.

The Tigers were looking to end a 2-year hiatus from the State Tournament, with a strong number of returners. To go along with a tough non-conference schedule though, the Northwest Iowa Soccer League was tougher than ever in 2025.

That was apparent on April 7th, when Spencer hosted 2024 State Qualifier in 1A, and eventual 2025 State Champion West Sioux after the Tigers 2-0 start. Spencer would lose to the Falcons 1-0, with the difference being a West Sioux Penalty kick.

The Tigers then were shut out by a highly ranked Dallas Center-Grimes side in a Tournament 3-0. Spencer responded big time though, edging out another 3A top 10 team in Norwalk 3-2.

After back-to-back wins against NWISL opponents, another ranked team hosted Spencer on April 22nd. Sioux Center and Spencer would tie at 2, inserting some more drama into the NWISL table.

The Tigers rattled off a couple wins after that, beating West of Sioux City and Sheldon/Sibley-Ocheyedan/South O’Brien by a combined 15-0.

Spencer hit the road to play another ranked 2A team, Bishop Heelan of Sioux City. In an expected Grueling match, Bishop Heelan prevailed, winning 2-1.

Down the stretch, Spencer went 3-0-1, tying a ranked 2A team in Unity Christian of Orange City and picking up wins against Western Christian of Hull, East of Sioux City, and North of Sioux City, to wrap up the regular season 10-3-2.

Spencer received the #1 seed in Class 3A Substate 1, and cruised through the bracket, beating Spirit Lake/Park/Okoboji 3-1 and Storm Lake 7-1.

The Tigers would get the #5 seed in the Class 3A State Tournament and go to Urbandale to play the #4 seed Jayhawks for the Quarterfinals. Urbandale, the eventual Class 3A State Champion of 2025, suffocated Spencer, and were able to score a pair of goals early on in the second half, ultimately beating the Tigers 2-0.

Over the course of the 2025 season, Spencer played 7 State Tournament qualifying teams, including the State Champions of Class 1A and 3A.

Spencer brought a balanced scoring attack to the table, with 3 players scoring double-digit goals, led by Camden Mosher’s 18 on the year. Along with his 15 goals scored on the year, Junior Cayden Brewer racked up 14 assists to lead the Tigers.

Spencer would bring GTRA in for a coop in 2025, which put Karen Behrends in the goal. Behrends allowed 17 Goals on the year with 120 saves and a Save% of 87.6.

Spencer Graduates Romeo Alvarez, Karen Behrends, Blake Kooker, Logan Polaschek, and Brady Vreeman. All 5 players were very important to Spencer’s success in the 2025 season. The Tigers do return a potent offense but will need to reinforce the Midfield and defensive 3rds.
