POCAHONTAS, IA (Northwestiowanow) – Eleven dogs were found and rescued from a property in Pocahontas County on Tuesday, August 19.

According to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, their Animal Welfare and Response Team assisted local law enforcement in responding to a case of animal neglect at a property in Pocahontas.

Seven dogs were discovered inside the house, and an additional four were later found trapped in the bathroom of a camper. Both locations were described as being covered in feces, urine, and other debris. The rescue team says the stench was so strong, it caused physical discomfort.

The dogs were found in varying states of neglect, suffering from a range of health issues including severe matting, hair loss, skin infections, and painfully overgrown nails. One dog was reported to be so matted, it was unable to move.

The ARL, which is currently caring for nearly 1,400 animals, quickly responded by arranging emergency housing and medical evaluations for the rescues. Each animal is receiving individual treatment, and some may require behavioral rehabilitation before they are ready for adoption.

The ARL is asking for public support to help cover the cost of care. Donations can be made through their website at www.arl-iowa.org. Those who join their Loyal Friends Club will also receive updates on the dogs’ recovery process.

At this time, authorities have not released details on potential charges in the case.
