Sioux City, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls and Boys Basketball Teams hit the road to play East of Sioux City Tuesday night.

In the Girls Contest, East high got off to a hot start from beyond the arc, hitting 5 3-pointers, outscoring Spencer 18-12 in the first 8-minutes.

The Tigers struggled to take care of the ball after the first quarter as the turnovers piled up. The Black Raiders outscored Spencer 16-13 in the 2nd to lead 34-25 going into the half.

East continued to pull away in the 3rd, capitalizing on more Spencer turnovers with an aggressive transition offense, and led 55-39 going into the 4th.

The Tigers would outscore the Black Raiders 12-8 in the 4th to get the deficit back within 15, but it wasn’t enough as Spencer fell 63-51.

East High improves to 2-0 on the year and were led in scoring by Lynasia Wooten who hit 4 3-pointers in the win on her way to a 16-point night. Scarlett Hollenkamp was in double figures off the bench for East, scoring 10. The Black Raiders will hit the road on Friday to open up Missouri River Conference play against Bishop Heelan of Sioux City.

Spencer falls to 1-1 on the young season. The Tigers were led in scoring by Calista Frankenstein’s 17. Sydnee Hopkins scored 13 for Spencer, with 9 coming in the second half. The Tigers will be on the road Thursday against Western Christian of Hull.

For the Boys game, it was a very high scoring 1st quarter, as East led 21-19.

Scoring slowed down significantly due to some missed shots and good on-ball defense from both teams, and the Black Raiders led 30-26 going into the half.

Spencer’s offense revved back up in the 3rd quarter, with the 3-point shot beginning to fall. Foster Roos and Larson Vulk combined for 16 3rd quarter points, and the Tigers led 47-44 going into the 4th.

The Spencer offense went cold in the 4th quarter, and East pulled away, making an adjustment to a 2-3 zone and forcing several Tiger turnovers. The Black Raiders captured the season-opening win 59-53.

East High is 1-0 and were led by Jack Ohman’s 19 points. Fami and Bilal Yusuf each were in double figures as well for the Black Raiders. East will go across town on Friday for a Missouri River Conference contest against Bishop Heelan of Sioux City.

Spencer was led in the season opening loss by Dylan Timmer who scored all 13 of his points in the 1st half. Foster Roos and Larson Vulk each contributed 11 for the Tigers. Spencer will face another very talented group on Thursday when they go to Hull to play Western Christian.
