Fall Grooming 101: Your Dog’s Coat Is Changing With the Season, Too

Cooler mornings, shorter days and changing leaves are all signs that fall is arriving.

But there’s another seasonal change you may notice around your house… More dog hair. Everywhere.

As the seasons change, many dogs begin shedding their summer coat and preparing for cooler weather. Depending on your dog’s breed and coat type, that transition can mean anything from a little extra hair on the couch to what feels like enough fur to build another dog!

Seasonal grooming isn’t just about keeping your dog looking good. Regular grooming is an important part of your pet’s overall health and comfort.

Why Does My Dog Shed More in the Fall?

Dogs’ coats naturally respond to changes in daylight and temperature.

Many double-coated breeds shed portions of their coat as the seasons change. Indoor dogs may shed somewhat differently because they live in a temperature-controlled environment, but seasonal shedding can still be noticeable.

Regular brushing helps remove loose hair before it ends up throughout your home, but more importantly, it gives you an opportunity to check your dog’s skin and coat.

Don’t Let Small Tangles Become Big Mats

For dogs with longer, curly or continuously growing coats, regular brushing is especially important.

A small tangle can quickly become a mat. Mats pull on the skin and can become uncomfortable or even painful for your dog. They can also trap moisture and debris close to the skin.

One of the best things you can do between professional grooming appointments is establish a consistent brushing routine at home.

Pay special attention to areas that tend to tangle easily, including behind the ears, under the collar, around the legs and feet, under the belly and anywhere a harness regularly rubs.

Don’t Forget the Feet

As we head toward cooler (and eventually wetter) weather, your dog’s paws deserve some attention, too.

Keeping nails at an appropriate length can help your dog walk comfortably and maintain proper footing. Hair around and between the paw pads may also need attention depending on the breed.

And once Mother Nature gives us the inevitable mud, snow and ice, checking your dog’s feet regularly becomes even more important.

How Often Should My Dog Be Groomed?

This is one of the questions pet owners ask us frequently, and the answer is: It depends on your dog.

Breed is certainly a factor, but coat type, length, lifestyle and the look you prefer all play a role.

A dog that spends a lot of time outside may have different grooming needs than a mostly indoor pet. A long-haired dog kept in a longer style will generally require more maintenance than one kept in a shorter trim.

That’s why we don’t believe grooming should be one-size-fits-all.

Grooming Is Also a Wellness Check

One of the overlooked benefits of regular grooming is simply having another set of experienced eyes and hands on your pet.

While grooming, we may notice changes in the skin or coat, unusual bumps, tender areas or other things an owner may want to keep an eye on or discuss with their veterinarian.

Grooming doesn’t replace veterinary care, of course, but regular hands-on attention can help owners become aware of changes they might not otherwise notice.

At Heartland Pet Resort, our grooming services range from baths and brushing to trims and full grooming appointments. We work with each dog individually based on their coat, condition, lifestyle and the owner’s preferences.

And don’t wait until your dog’s coat is badly tangled or matted to schedule an appointment. Preventive grooming is easier and more comfortable for your dog than trying to correct months of coat problems in one visit.

Not sure how often your dog should be groomed?

Talk with the Heartland Pet Resort team. We can help recommend a grooming schedule and at-home maintenance routine based on your dog’s individual needs.

Because a clean, healthy coat isn’t just about looking good.

It’s about helping your dog feel good, too.
