Fatal Accident on Hwy 9

Estherville, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — A two-vehicle accident East of Estherville Friday night left one driver dead and the other injured.

The Iowa State Patrol says the crash occurred around 6:45pm one mile East of town on Highway 9. 41 year old John Bumgart of Armstrong was Westbound in a pickup that crossed the center line and struck an Eastbound semi tractor driven by 50 year old Karie Eisma of Hawarden. Bumgart entered the North ditched and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.  Eisma’s semi entered the South ditch and burst into flames. She was transported to the Holy Family Hospital in Estherville by ambulance. She was wearing a safety restraint.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Department and Estherville Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
