Pitching Dominates in Spencer’s 2-0 Win Against Sioux Central

Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Softball team welcomed Sioux Central to town for a non-conference matchup, only the two neighboring schools second meeting since 2008.

The Spencer workhorse in the circle Jersey Vail got the start for the Tigers while sophomore Sage Weber threw for the Rebels.

Spencer struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning. After Dakota Lux drew a walk, Mercedes Kreig bunted her over to second, setting up the top bat in the Tiger lineup, Lucy Simington, with a runner in scoring position.

Brynn Merchant came up next and would bring Simington in to extend the Tiger lead to two.

In the first 3 innings, Vail faced 11 Rebel batters and struck out 7 of them, not allowing a hit till the 9th plate appearance from Sioux Central.

Sage Weber settled into a nice rhythm after the tough first inning, retiring 9 Spencer batters in a row until a reach on error in the 4th inning. for the remainder of the game, Spencer was only able to get 1 more hit and 3 total baserunners.

The Sioux Central offense couldn’t get started on the flipside, with their best chance coming in the 4th when they put a couple of runners in scoring position but grounded out to end the frame.

Spencer came away with the 2-0 win, improving to 21-5 on the season and notching their 7th win in a row. Jresey Vail got the win, her 20th on the year, throwing 7 complete with only 2 hits allowed, 0 runs, walking 2 and striking out 11.

Sioux Central drops to 16-10 on the year and Sage Weber absorbs the loss in a good effort of 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs, no walks, and 8 strikeouts.
