Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Boys Soccer team was at home on Thursday to play host to Storm Lake in Northwest Iowa Soccer League action. The Tigers came into the contest leading the NWISL table in points with 13, Storm Lake was tied for 2nd with Unity Christian of Orange City with 12, making for a pivotal matchup.

After each side felt each other out for a few minutes, Camden Mosher scored the first goal in the 8th minute to give Spencer a 1-0 lead.

Spencer had several opportunities throughout the first half but failed to cash in to extend the lead. Storm Lake, who had much fewer chances, capitalized on a big one when Spencer was called for a foul in the penalty area. Cairo Hernandez, Class 3A’s #4 ranked goal scorer this season, lined up for a penalty kick.

Spencer had a Corner kick opportunity with under 50 seconds to go in the half, and it was Cayden Brewer scoring his 16th goal on the year to draw even with Storm Lake’s Hernandez, and give Spencer a 2-1 lead going in to the half.

The offense picked up significantly in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Cayden Brewer got his second goal on an assist from Nolan McCusker.

Storm Lake would respond with a well delivered corner kick from the foot of Edgar Duarte which found the head of Maker Kuel.

Trailing by one goal, Storm Lake fouled Spencer in the penalty area in the matches 48th minute, giving Camden Mosher an opportunity at the Penalty Kick.

With the 4-2 lead, Spencer added some insurance in the matches 53rd minute when Cameron Vanderheide flew in on a corner kick to score his first goal on the year.

Spencer coasted from there, picking up the 5-2 win. Storm Lake falls to 4-5-0 on the year and 4-3-0 in the Northwest Iowa Soccer League. They will be on the road against Denison-Schleswig Friday night.

The Tigers improve to 6-2-1 with their 5th straight victory and 6-0-1 in the Northwest Iowa Soccer League. A huge matchup awaits them Friday night at home against a ranked Bishop Heelan of Sioux City side.
