SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – The City of Spencer has officially been named the 2025 Iowa Community of Character by the Iowa CHARACTER COUNTS! Program.

During a special ceremony held Tuesday, August 26, in the Spencer Council Chambers, Ryan Harris, Associate Director of Business Development for CHARACTER COUNTS! at the Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University, made a personal visit to present the award.

The CHARACTER COUNTS! Program honors communities that exemplify the six pillars of good character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

The award follows Spencer’s response to the devastating flood on June 22, 2024. In the aftermath, local leaders, first responders, volunteers, and businesses united in a community-wide effort to rebuild and support one another.

Among those recognized was Sheriffa Jones, Executive Director of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce.

Spencer Mayor Steve Bomgaars accepted the award on behalf of the city’s residents.

The Iowa CHARACTER COUNTS! Program encourages nominations from across the state. Harris urged Spencer residents to continue recognizing individuals and organizations that demonstrate strong values and character in their communities.
