Storm Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) – A Friday morning domestic dispute in Storm Lake escalated into an armed tactical response on the city’s east side Friday evening, ending with two arrests and a firearm taken off the streets.

Police say the chain of events began around 10:00 AM at a home on East 12th Street, where 20-year-old Leodan Rojas allegedly assaulted a woman and smashed her phone. Less than an hour later, 22-year-old Emily Gonzalez-Vazquez arrived at the home, allegedly punching Rojas and pointing a handgun at him.

While officers quickly took both suspects into custody, the investigation led them to an apartment on Harmony Court where Gonzalez-Vazquez reportedly tossed the gun.

Because of the weapon, the Storm Lake Police Tactical Team and crisis negotiators swarmed the neighborhood just before 6:30 PM, forcing nearby residents to briefly evacuate or shelter in place. The high-risk standoff lasted just 40 minutes, ending safely when tactical officers secured the scene and recovered the weapon.

City officials later commended the calm professionalism of the responding officers, noting they defused the volatile situation without any injuries despite facing uncooperative individuals at the scene.

Rojas and Gonzalez-Vazquez are both held in the Buena Vista County Jail on $2,000 bonds, facing multiple assault and criminal mischief charges.
