Orange City, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Spencer collided with MOC-Floyd Valley in the IHSAA Substate 1 Quarterfinal last night for Basketball.

MOC-Floyd Valley hit the offensive glass hard in the first quarter, and tough perimeter trapping defense made it tough for Spencer to get good looks at the hoop. The Dutchmen also hit 3 3-pointers in the first 8 minutes, leading 16-10 going into the 2nd quarter.

Trycen Groendyke came off the bench in a big way for MOC-Floyd Valley, scoring 8 2nd quarter points, including a pair of 3-pointers, The Spencer offense struggled to get clean looks at the rim, and only scored 5 in the 2nd to the Dutchmen 17, and MOC-Floyd Valley led 33-15 going into the half.

Both teams had their highest scoring quarter in the 3rd, but the Dutchmen still grew their lead more as 3s continued to fall, including two more from Groendyke, and MOC-Floyd Valley led 53-31 going into the 4th.

Neither team had an edge in the fourth, and the #2 seed Dutchmen cruised to a 63-41 win over the Tigers.

MOC-Floyd Valley was led by Trycen Groendyke, who hit 6 3-pointers on his way to 20 points. Jacob Mulder was also in double-figures with 11 as the Dutchmen advance to the Substate Semifinal where they will host the #3 seed Sioux Center who MOC-Floyd Valley has split with this season in a 73-66 loss and a 62-50 win. That game will be played at 7:00 in Orange City on February 26th.

Spencer finishes the 2025-2026 season 6-16. The Tigers went 3-5 in the Lakes Conference where they finished 3rd. Larson Vulk led Spencer with 11 points. Dylan Timmer had 10 in the loss.
