Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Upper Des Moines Opportunity faced a tough financial forecast at the Clay County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, November 25th in Spencer.

Executive Director Julie Edwards presented the agency’s annual report, highlighting that over 1.3 million dollars in assistance was reinvested into Clay County last year. But with the Supervisors warning of a tight budget year ahead due to state legislative changes, Edwards says any cuts to their funding will be felt immediately.

With government support uncertain, UDMO is urging residents to consider monetary donations rather than food items this holiday season. Director of Development Shakira Meyer says cash is simply more efficient.

The group also took time to dispel a common misconception about exactly who is walking through their doors for help.

The Clay County Board of Supervisors assured all groups requesting funding at today’s meeting, leading up to the official budget sessions, that it’s going to be tough this year. The next board meeting is scheduled for December 9, 2025.
